Returning to the UAE After More Than 6 Months Abroad (Dubai)

A UAE residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 continuous days abroad. Here is who is exempt, how a Dubai resident applies for a GDRFA return permit to fly back, and what to do if the visa has already lapsed.

Typical timeline the return permit itself is usually decided within about 2 working days; you must then enter the UAE within 30 days of approval

Who runs this process

GDRFA
General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai
Issues the return permit that lets a Dubai resident re-enter after more than 6 months abroad
ICP
Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security
Handles the equivalent entry permit for residents of emirates other than Dubai, and issues new entry permits when a residence visa has lapsed

Before you start

  • You hold a UAE residence visa issued in Dubai (GDRFA jurisdiction)
  • You have stayed, or expect to stay, outside the UAE for more than 180 continuous days
  • You are not in an exempt category (Golden, Green, or Blue residency, foreign wife of an Emirati, students and public-sector staff sent abroad, and others listed by the authorities)
  • You have a genuine reason for the long absence that you can document (study, work, medical treatment, or a crisis)
180 days

A residence visa is nullified automatically once the holder spends more than 180 continuous days outside the UAE. The clock runs from the last date of departure. Golden, Green, and Blue residency holders, investors, students and public-sector staff sent abroad, and the foreign wife of an Emirati are among the categories this rule does not apply to. After 180 days the residence visa is void. To return you must first obtain a return permit (or, if the visa cannot be salvaged, a new entry permit through your sponsor).

  1. 1

Check whether the 6-month rule applies to you

Confirm your category before assuming your visa is at risk

The general rule is that a residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the UAE. Several categories are exempt and keep a valid visa regardless. These include Golden, Green, and Blue residency holders, investors, the foreign wife of an Emirati, students studying abroad, and public-sector employees sent abroad for training or work. If you fall in an exempt group, you can enter directly while your residency is valid and do not need a return permit.

    You get
A clear answer on whether you need a return permit at all
    Typical time
same day (indicative, confirm on the portal)
    Fee
Free · paid by you (No fee to check your category)
    Watch out for
    • Assuming the 6-month rule is a fixed 6 calendar months: it is 180 continuous days counted from your departure date
    • Assuming Golden Visa holders lose residency after 6 months: they do not, though investor and Golden holders should not stay out for more than one continuous year

Golden Green Blue: Golden, Green, and Blue residency holders are exempt from the 6-month rule and can enter at any time while their residency is valid. No return permit is required.

  2. 2

    Confirm your remaining residence validity

You need at least some validity left for a return permit, not a fully expired visa

Check your residence file and its expiry date before applying. A return permit is meant to bring you back on an existing, still-valid residence; the remaining validity must cover the trip. If the residence has already fully expired, a return permit will not help and your sponsor must instead apply for a new entry permit and re-issue the residence.

    You get
Confirmation of whether your residence is still valid or has lapsed
    Typical time
same day (indicative, confirm on the portal)
    Fee
Fee varies, confirm at the official portal · paid by you (Online status checks are free; some centres charge a small typing or service fee)
    Watch out for
    • Leaving it too late: the return permit must be applied for while the residence still has validity remaining

Already Lapsed: If the residence has already expired, skip the return permit. Your sponsor re-applies for a fresh entry permit and residence from inside the UAE (see step 5).

  3. 3

Apply for a GDRFA return permit from outside the UAE

Dubai residents apply to GDRFA; residents of other emirates apply to ICP instead

From outside the country, a Dubai resident applies online through GDRFA (the website or app, ideally signed in with UAE Pass) for a return permit. You supply passport and Emirates ID details, sponsor information, and select a reason for the long absence from the list, such as study, health, or a crisis. GDRFA reviews the justification and decides. Residents of other emirates use the equivalent ICP service instead.

    You get
A return permit approval allowing one entry into the UAE
    Typical time
about 2 working days (indicative, confirm on the portal)
    Fee
Fee varies, confirm at the official portal · paid by you (GDRFA charges a service fee for the return permit, commonly cited around AED 738.90; confirm the current amount at GDRFA before applying)
    Deadline
Apply only after 180 days outside the country, and while the residence still has validity remaining.
    Watch out for
    • Trying to apply after arriving at the airport: the permit is applied for from outside the country, before you travel
    • Applying without a documented reason: GDRFA and ICP both require a valid justification for the absence beyond 180 days

Other Emirate: Outside Dubai, use the ICP service "Issuance of a Permit to Stay Outside the Country for More Than 6 Months". ICP lists a smart-services fee of AED 100 plus a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside the country, with a 2-day service time. This ICP service is not for Dubai residents.

Golden Green Blue: Not needed. Golden, Green, and Blue residency holders enter directly while their residency is valid.

Travel back within 30 days of approval

The approval is time-limited and single-use

Once the return permit is approved, you must enter the UAE within 30 days of the approval date. The Dubai return permit is valid for one month from approval and for one trip only, and it cannot extend past your residence expiry date. Enter the country on the approval, then regularise your residence as normal once you are back.

    You get
Legal re-entry into the UAE on the existing residence
    Typical time
    within 30 days of approval
    Fee
Fee varies, confirm at the official portal · paid by you (The entry itself carries no separate fee beyond the return permit charge paid in step 3)
    Deadline
Must enter the UAE within 30 days starting from the approval date.
    Watch out for
    • Missing the 30-day window: the approval lapses and you would have to apply again
    • Booking a round trip: the return permit covers a single entry only

Other Emirate: The 30-day entry window applies to the ICP permit too: once approved, enter within 30 days of the approval date.

If the residence has fully lapsed: re-issue through your sponsor

Only if the residence is beyond saving with a return permit

If the residence visa has already expired and cannot be recovered with a return permit, the residency ends and you re-enter as a new applicant. Your sponsor, the employer for a work visa or the family sponsor for a dependent, applies for a fresh entry permit and re-issues the residence, following the normal issuance process. This is the same route as a first-time residence, so budget for the standard medical, Emirates ID, and stamping steps.

    You get
A new entry permit and a re-issued residence visa
    Typical time
same as a new residence application (indicative, confirm on the portal)
    Fee
Fee varies, confirm at the official portal · paid by you (A re-issued residence carries the standard entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, and stamping fees; confirm current amounts with GDRFA or ICP)
    Watch out for
    • Assuming a lapsed residence can always be revived: once it is void, the process is a fresh application, not a renewal

Still Valid: Not applicable while the residence is still valid; use the return permit route in steps 3 and 4 instead.

Full guide: If the residence has fully lapsed: re-issue through your sponsor

Where this goes wrong

Counting 6 months instead of 180 days

The rule is 180 continuous days outside the UAE, counted from your departure date, not six calendar months. Track it from the day you left, and apply for the return permit before the residence expiry passes. Read the full guide.

Assuming Golden Visa holders are affected

Golden, Green, and Blue residency holders keep a valid residence regardless of how long they are away and can enter directly. Investor and Golden holders should still avoid staying out for more than one continuous year. Read the full guide.

Using the wrong authority

Dubai residents apply to GDRFA; residents of every other emirate use the ICP service. The ICP service explicitly excludes Dubai residents, so applying to the wrong one wastes time. Read the full guide.

Applying without a documented reason

Both GDRFA and ICP require a valid, evidenced reason for the absence beyond 180 days, such as study, work, or medical treatment. A vague reason with no supporting document risks rejection.

Treating a lapsed visa as recoverable

Once a residence visa is void, a return permit will not revive it. The sponsor must apply for a new entry permit and re-issue the residence from scratch. Read the full guide.
