A practical guide for UAE residents, sponsors, and employers who need to cancel a residence visa while the visa holder is abroad. It covers the GDRFA Dubai, ICP, and MOHRE steps, current fees, and what happens if you stay outside the UAE for more than 180 days.
Yes, a UAE residence visa can be cancelled while the holder is outside the country. The sponsor files the cancellation, not the visa holder, and the holder does not need to fly back. For a Dubai-issued visa, GDRFA Dubai’s published FAQ quotes AED 290 plus Amer center fees for an individual sponsor and AED 325 for a company when the sponsored person is outside the UAE, against AED 190 and AED 225 when they are inside. For visas issued in the other emirates, ICP lists an AED 50 application fee and an AED 100 smart services fee, with a two-day completion time. For employment visas, the employer must cancel the MOHRE work permit first, and MOHRE exempts employees who are overseas from signing the cancellation form.
Separately, any resident who stays outside the UAE for more than 180 continuous days has their residence visa nullified automatically, unless they fall into an exempt category such as Golden, Green, or Blue Residence. That lapse is not the same as a clean cancellation, and the difference matters when you apply for a new visa later.
Which Situation Are You In?
Most readers arrive here in one of four situations. Find yours first, because the route and the fee differ.
| Your situation | What to do | Who files |
|---|---|---|
| You left the UAE for good and your visa is still active | Ask your sponsor to file an outside-country cancellation (steps below) | Employer or family sponsor |
| You are abroad more than 180 days and want to come back on the same visa | Apply for the permit to stay outside the UAE for more than six months (ICP for non-Dubai visas, GDRFA Dubai for Dubai visas) | You, from outside the UAE |
| You are abroad and your employer has stopped responding | Check your file status, then use the unresponsive-sponsor route below | You or a representative in the UAE |
| You are the sponsor and your dependents are abroad | Cancel each dependent’s visa before your own | You, as sponsor |
How UAE Residence Visa Cancellation Outside the Country Differs from In-Country Cancellation
The UAE lets a sponsor cancel a residence visa whether the sponsored person is inside or outside the country. The authority is the same in both cases: GDRFA Dubai for Dubai-issued visas and ICP for visas issued in the other emirates. What changes is the fee in Dubai and the passport requirement.
| Aspect | Inside the country | Outside the country |
|---|---|---|
| GDRFA Dubai fee, individual sponsor | AED 190 + Amer center fees | AED 290 + Amer center fees |
| GDRFA Dubai fee, company sponsor | AED 225 | AED 325 |
| Sponsored person’s original passport | Required | Required only if the residence is still valid and the person has been outside for less than six months |
| Sponsored person’s original Emirates ID | Required | Required |
| Employee signature on MOHRE form | Required | Not required (overseas exemption) |

A note on the Dubai fee. GDRFA publishes its fees in two places, and they are itemized differently. The FAQ quotes the all-in AED 290 and AED 325 figures above. The GDRFA service card lists the components instead: an AED 50 service fee, AED 100 for the residence permit cancellation, and AED 10 each for the Knowledge and Innovation Dirhams. Neither page separates the outside-country surcharge from the typing charges, so treat AED 290 as a guide and confirm the final amount on the payment screen before you pay.
Who Can Cancel a Residence Visa
Only the sponsor can cancel a residence visa. The UAE Government Portal states that the visa holder cannot process the application on their own. This applies whether the person is inside the UAE or abroad.
The practical exception is an investor or partner who is effectively their own sponsor. ICP asks investors and partners for a certificate showing the commercial license was cancelled or the share was waived, which is why their cancellation usually follows the company closure or exit.
Employment Visas: The Employer Cancels the Work Permit First
For private-sector employment visas, the employer must cancel the labor contract and work permit with MOHRE before the residence can be cancelled. GDRFA Dubai lists the MOHRE work permit cancellation extract as a required document.
Normally the employee signs the MOHRE form to agree to the cancellation and confirm they received all labor dues. MOHRE excludes employees who are overseas from that requirement, along with deceased employees, employees with contagious diseases, and employees who were administratively cancelled. For a worker outside the country, MOHRE asks the employer for the residence visa details instead.
The signature exemption does not cancel what you are owed. Your end-of-service gratuity, unpaid salary, and leave pay remain due whether or not you signed. See our guide to end-of-service gratuity rules before you agree to anything from abroad.
Family Visas: Dependents Come First
A sponsor must cancel dependents’ visas before cancelling their own. ICP’s terms say family members’ permits must be cancelled first, or placed on hold for a limited period with fees. ICP also lists an AED 5,000 guarantee for cancelling the sponsor’s residence without cancelling the family members’ permits, which applies when the sponsor is moving to a new employer and meets the salary and occupation conditions.
Domestic worker residences are cancelled through MOHRE or the Domestic Work Bundle, not through the standard ICP service.
Step-by-Step Process: Cancelling a Dubai Residence Visa While the Person Is Outside the UAE
These steps apply to visas issued by GDRFA Dubai. Our Dubai visa cancellation process hub shows the same sequence as a checklist. Visas from the other emirates follow the ICP route in the next section.
Step 1: Cancel the MOHRE Work Permit (Employment Visas Only)
Who files: the employer, through the MOHRE app or website or a business service center.
What is needed: the work permit details and, for a worker outside the country, the residence visa details. The employee’s signature is not required.
Cost: MOHRE caps business service center commission at AED 72, excluding tax and collection charges (MOHRE).
Skip this step for family, investor, and domestic worker visas.
Step 2: File the Residence Cancellation with GDRFA Dubai
Where: the GDRFA Dubai website or smart app (log in with UAE Pass), or any Amer service center.
Documents (GDRFA Dubai):
- Cancellation application, generated in the app or at the Amer center
- Sponsored person’s original passport, only if the residence is still valid and they have been outside for less than six months
- Sponsored person’s original Emirates ID
- Sponsor’s original passport and Emirates ID
- MOHRE work permit cancellation extract, for private-sector employees
Fee: AED 290 plus Amer center fees for an individual sponsor, AED 325 for a company.
Timing: GDRFA’s service card gives an expected completion time of 48 hours.
Step 3: Keep the Cancellation Record
Once approved, the residence and the Emirates ID linked to it are cancelled together (ICP). Save the confirmation and reference number. It is your proof that the file closed cleanly, and a future employer’s visa application will look for it.
If the Passport Is with You Abroad
This is the most common snag. GDRFA requires the original passport only while the residence is still valid and you have been away for less than six months. In that window, sponsors usually either courier the passport or wait until the six-month mark passes. Before choosing, ask the Amer center whether they will accept a clear scan in your case; GDRFA does not publish a written exception, so get the answer before you pay the fee.
Cancellation via ICP (Visas Issued Outside Dubai)
For Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the other emirates, the sponsor files through ICP Smart Services with UAE Pass, or through an ICP-registered typing center. ICP’s cancellation of residency permits service lists:
| ICP fee item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application fee | AED 50 |
| Smart services fee | AED 100 |
| Exceptional cancellation (disputes, death of the guarantor) | AED 100 |
| Guarantee to cancel the sponsor without cancelling family members | AED 5,000 |
| Completion time | 2 days |
ICP’s documents list is short: the passport, plus a license cancellation or waiver certificate for investors and partners, and a death certificate where the cancellation follows a death (certified by the official authorities if the death happened overseas).
The 180-Day Rule: Automatic Visa Cancellation for Extended Absence
The UAE Government Portal states the general rule: if an expatriate resident lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously, their residence visa is nullified automatically, and they need a new entry permit to come back. No application or notice is involved. Our full guide to the 180-day rule covers how the days are counted.
Automatic nullification is not a sponsor cancellation. Your Emirates ID card still shows its printed expiry date, and UAE Pass or banking logins may keep working for a while. That does not mean your residence is still valid. The status that counts is the one on your ICP or GDRFA file.
Categories Exempt from the 180-Day Rule
Two official sources list exemptions, and they overlap only partly. ICP names Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders, and the husband of a UAE national woman when she sponsors him: they may enter at any time while the residence is valid. The UAE Government Portal adds:
- the foreign wife of an Emirati citizen
- expatriate residents and their companions sent abroad for treatment, with a medical report approved by UAE medical authorities
- public-sector expatriate employees sent abroad for training or specialist courses, or working in their employer’s offices abroad, and their families
- students enrolled in educational institutions abroad who hold valid UAE residence visas (the portal notes the students rule follows Dubai practice, so confirm it for your emirate)
- investors holding valid UAE residence visas
- residents sponsored by UAE diplomatic and consular representatives, and their dependents
- domestic helpers accompanying Emirati students or patients abroad, UAE diplomatic mission staff, or members of the ruling families
- any other person excluded by an ICP decision, provided they hold a valid residence visa and pay the fees
If you are in one of the portal-only categories, keep the supporting evidence (medical report, enrollment letter, employer letter) with you when you travel back.
Re-Entry Permit After Staying Outside the UAE for Over 180 Days
If you are not exempt and want to return on the same residence, you can apply for a permit to stay outside the UAE for more than six months. Our re-entry permit process hub walks through it, and the returning after six months guide covers real cases. ICP’s conditions are strict (ICP service page):
| Condition | ICP requirement |
|---|---|
| Where you apply from | Outside the UAE only |
| When you can apply | After completing 180 days outside the UAE |
| Remaining residence validity | More than 30 days at the time of application |
| Reason | A valid reason with proof, such as study, work, or treatment |
| Fees | AED 100 smart services fee, plus a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside the UAE |
| Processing | 2 days |
| After approval | Enter the UAE within 30 days, counting the approval date |
Dubai residents: ICP states that this permit does not apply to residents of the Emirate of Dubai. Dubai visa holders apply through GDRFA Dubai instead.
The remaining-validity condition catches many people. If your residence is due to expire within 30 days, or has already expired, this permit is not available, and your sponsor will need to arrange a new entry permit and visa.
Fees Breakdown: Outside-Country Visa Cancellation in Dubai
| Fee item | Amount (AED) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| GDRFA Dubai outside-country cancellation, individual sponsor | 290 + Amer center fees | GDRFA FAQ |
| GDRFA Dubai outside-country cancellation, company sponsor | 325 | GDRFA FAQ |
| MOHRE work permit cancellation, service center commission | Capped at 72, excluding tax and collection charges | MOHRE |
| ICP cancellation (non-Dubai visas) | 50 application + 100 smart services | ICP |
| ICP permit to stay outside for more than six months | 100 + 100 per 30 days outside | ICP |
Typing center charges and VAT can be added on top. Fees change without notice, so treat the payment screen as the final word.
Grace Period After Visa Cancellation
If you are inside the UAE when the visa is cancelled, you get a grace period to find a new job, change status, or leave. ICP now sets it by category:
| Grace period | Who gets it |
|---|---|
| 180 days | Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders and their family members; widows or divorced women of residents; students after completing their studies; foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens |
| 90 days | Skilled workers in levels 1 to 3; property owners |
| 60 days | Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host |
| 30 days | All other categories |
After the grace period ends, a fine of AED 50 per day applies. GDRFA Dubai’s service card still mentions a flat 60-day grace period, which predates ICP’s tiered schedule. Check your skill level on your MOHRE work permit, and see our grace period guide for how the start date is counted.
If you are already abroad and not coming back, the grace period has no practical effect. It only matters if you plan to re-enter to settle your affairs before it runs out.
Common Complications with Outside-Country Cancellation
Sponsor Is Unresponsive or the Company Has Closed
If your employer will not cancel, you or a representative in the UAE can raise a complaint with MOHRE and take evidence to GDRFA Dubai or ICP. ICP accepts an exceptional cancellation in cases such as disputes or the death of the guarantor, for an extra AED 100. Keep your resignation or termination email, your last payslip, and your exit stamp or entry-exit report as evidence.
Leaving Without Formal Cancellation
Leaving without a cancellation causes problems for both sides. After 180 days the visa lapses, but the file does not show a clean cancellation, and a future visa application can stall on it. An employer may also file an absconding report against an employee who leaves without completing the exit process. Check your status with our guide to absconding cases and run a travel ban check before you book a return flight.
Fines for Extended Absence
The two fines are easy to confuse. Inside the UAE after the grace period, the fine is AED 50 per day (ICP). Outside the UAE beyond 180 days, the permit to return carries a fine of AED 100 per 30 days or part of 30 days (ICP). ICP does not say whether the 30-day blocks are counted from your departure or from day 181, so expect the portal to calculate the figure when you apply.
Checking Visa Cancellation Status Online
Both the sponsor and the visa holder can check whether the cancellation went through:
- ICP Smart Services at smartservices.icp.gov.ae, using the file validity inquiry with your passport or Emirates ID details
- GDRFA Dubai website or app, for Dubai-issued visas
- UAEICP app on iOS and Android
Keep every SMS, email, and reference number from the cancellation. They are the quickest proof if a later application shows an old file as open.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel my UAE residence visa if I am outside the country?
Not by yourself. The sponsor, whether an employer or a family member, files the cancellation with GDRFA Dubai for Dubai visas or ICP for the other emirates. You do not need to be in the UAE, and if you are an employee, MOHRE does not require your signature while you are overseas.
How much does it cost to cancel a residence visa from outside the UAE in Dubai?
GDRFA Dubai’s FAQ quotes AED 290 plus Amer center fees for an individual sponsor and AED 325 for a company. For visas from the other emirates, ICP lists an AED 50 application fee and an AED 100 smart services fee.
What happens if I stay outside the UAE for more than 6 months?
Your residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 continuous days abroad, unless you are in an exempt category. To return on the same residence, apply from abroad for ICP’s permit to stay outside for more than six months: AED 100 plus AED 100 for every 30 days outside, with more than 30 days of residence validity remaining. Dubai residents apply through GDRFA Dubai.
Does my employer need my signature to cancel my visa while I am abroad?
No. MOHRE excludes employees who are overseas from the signature requirement on the work permit cancellation form. Your gratuity and other dues remain payable regardless.
Do I need to cancel my dependents’ visas before my own?
Yes. ICP requires family members’ permits to be cancelled first or placed on hold for a limited period with fees. ICP also lists an AED 5,000 guarantee to cancel the sponsor’s residence while keeping the family’s permits, when the sponsor is moving to a new employer.
Can I get a new UAE visa if my old one was never cancelled?
An old file that was never closed can delay or block a new visa. If your former sponsor is unreachable or the company has closed, a representative can apply to GDRFA Dubai or ICP with evidence, and ICP offers an exceptional cancellation for disputes for AED 100.
How long does outside-country cancellation take?
GDRFA Dubai gives an expected completion time of 48 hours, and ICP gives 2 days, once all documents are in order. The MOHRE work permit cancellation must be done first for private-sector employees.
Can Dubai residents use ICP’s re-entry permit for staying abroad more than 6 months?
No. ICP states that its permit for residents staying outside the UAE for more than six months does not apply to residents of the Emirate of Dubai. Dubai visa holders apply through GDRFA Dubai.
What is the grace period after visa cancellation if I am inside the UAE?
ICP sets it by category: 180 days for Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders and some family categories, 90 days for skilled workers in levels 1 to 3 and property owners, 60 days for permits issued with a guarantor or host, and 30 days for everyone else. After that, the fine is AED 50 per day.
Can a Golden Visa holder stay outside the UAE for more than 180 days?
Yes. ICP states that Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders may enter the UAE at any time as long as their residence is valid, so the 180-day rule does not apply to them.
