A UAE student visa is issued for one year at a time, renewable for a similar period on proof that the study is continuing, and it can be sponsored either by a parent who is already a UAE resident or by the accredited university or college itself. Where most guides go wrong is on work: there is no general term-time work right attached to a student visa. What exists is a set of named MOHRE permits, and the one open to a university student for free is the private teacher work permit, granted for two years at no charge.
This guide covers which sponsor to use and why it matters, the age rules that push male students off a parent’s sponsorship at 25, what a student can and cannot legally do for money, the little-known rule that lets a student’s own family stay in the country, and the outstanding student Golden Visa, including what the official criteria actually say rather than what is repeated online.
Who Sponsors a UAE Student Visa
There are two sponsorship routes and they are not interchangeable. A student can stay in the UAE “either under the sponsorship of his/her parent, who should be a resident of the UAE, or under the sponsorship of the accredited university/college he/she is studying at.”
Which route applies is usually decided by the facts rather than by preference. A student whose family already lives in the UAE normally stays on the parent’s residence visa as a dependant. A student arriving from abroad to study is sponsored by the institution, and the university’s student affairs office runs the process.
| Parent sponsorship | University sponsorship | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | A student whose parent already holds a UAE residence visa | A student coming from abroad specifically to study |
| Who runs the paperwork | The sponsoring parent, on the normal family visa route | The institution’s student affairs office |
| Age constraint | Sons to 25, then only with evidence of enrolment; daughters regardless of age until married | None stated, the visa follows the enrolment |
| What happens if studies stop | A son over 25 loses the basis for the extension; a daughter is unaffected on age grounds | The institution has no basis to renew, and the visa lapses at the end of its term |
What documents does a UAE student visa need?
The specific requirement is short: “a certificate issued by the university or institute specifying the duration of the study,” plus the general provisions that apply to every UAE residence visa. Those general provisions are where the volume sits, and in practice they mean a medical fitness test, biometrics and Emirates ID registration, and health insurance. Our guides to the medical test for a UAE visa and mandatory health insurance cover both. If your qualifications were issued abroad, expect the institution to ask for them to be attested, which is a separate process covered in our guide to educational certificate attestation.
The Age Rules That Catch Families
Expatriate residents can sponsor male children up to the age of 25. Beyond that, a male student can only stay on a parent’s sponsorship “if they provide evidence of attending a higher educational institute.” Female children can be sponsored for study “regardless of their age, until she is married.”
That asymmetry is the single most-asked question in this area and it is worth stating plainly. A 26-year-old son on his father’s visa is not automatically out of status, but the enrolment evidence is now doing all the work: it is the only thing holding the sponsorship up. An older version of the same official page put the threshold at “a minimum of one year’s course,” so a short certificate programme is a weaker basis than a full degree.
The practical consequence is a timing one. If a son will turn 25 mid-degree, the renewal that falls after his birthday is the one to prepare for, not the one before it. Get the enrolment letter dated close to the renewal and stating the full remaining duration of the programme. The broader dependant age framework, including what happens to daughters and to children who finish studying, is set out in our guide to UAE family visa age limits.
Can a Student Work in the UAE?
Not without a permit, and not on the terms most sources describe. Article 6 of Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021 makes it illegal to work in the UAE without a valid work permit issued by MOHRE, and equally illegal for an employer to engage anyone without one. Three named permits are relevant to students, and none of them is a blanket 20-hours-a-week term-time allowance.
The student training and employment permit
This is the permit built for the purpose. MOHRE describes it as enabling establishments to employ a student aged 15 who is already in the UAE, and states that the permit is valid for three months. The underlying instrument is Ministerial Decree No. 519 of 2018 on Regulations and Conditions of Training and Employment of Students, and it splits the arrangement in two.
For training, any establishment may train students aged 15 and above under a written contract that must set out the areas of training, the duration of the training period, weekly and other holidays, and the value of any bonus or privileges. For employment, any establishment may recruit students aged 15 and above during their academic holidays, for a maximum of three consecutive months each time, under a contract clarifying the nature of the work, its duration, the wage, the weekly holiday and the number of daily working hours.
The conditions are proof of student status, a valid UAE residence visa for expatriate students, a copy of the Emirates ID, and, for training specifically, a no-objection certificate from the educational institute. One consequence is easy to miss and expensive to discover late: “the trained or employed student is not entitled to end-of-service gratuity and any other leaves, except as stipulated in the contract.” If you want paid leave, it has to be written into the contract, because the statutory default does not supply it.
The part-time work permit
The part-time permit is not student-specific. It lets an establishment employ a worker “under a part-time contract, where the working hours or days are fewer than those of a full-time employee,” and a worker may hold more than one such job “after obtaining approval from the Ministry.” The general rule that a worker must be at least 18 applies here, with the juvenile and student permits as the only stated exceptions. Our guide to the MOHRE part-time work permit covers the mechanics, and temporary versus mission work permits covers the two adjacent categories students are often wrongly pointed at.
The private teacher permit, which is free
This is the most useful and least known route. MOHRE’s private teacher work permit is expressly open to “school students aged 15 to 18, and university students,” is applied for through the MOHRE app, website or digital channels, and “the permit is granted free of charge for two years.” It sits under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 on private tuition work permits. Tutoring without it is not a grey area: individuals offering private tutoring without a MOHRE permit “will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws.”
For a university student who wants legitimate, flexible income, a two-year free permit that they hold personally is a materially better instrument than hoping an employer will file a three-month student permit for them.
A Student Can Bring Their Own Family
The official position is that family members of foreign students studying at UAE universities may stay in the UAE “as long as they can afford suitable housing,” a measure the government describes as aimed at achieving moral stability for the students.
This is one of the more generous provisions in the residence system and it is almost never mentioned in study-abroad material. The condition as published is housing capacity rather than a salary threshold, which is a different test from the one that governs an ordinary family sponsorship. Because the wording is broad and the implementation sits with ICP and the emirate residency authority, treat it as a route to raise with the university’s student affairs office and confirm at application rather than a guaranteed entitlement. The standard family sponsorship rules, which are the fallback if this route is refused, are in our guide to UAE family visa requirements.
The Outstanding Student Golden Visa
The Golden Visa category for outstanding students runs to 5 years for high school achievers and 10 years for top university students. The official requirements are stated as “certificates of excellence, recommendation letters from school or university.” No grade threshold is published on the government’s own page.
That last point matters, because a specific GPA figure circulates widely as though it were the rule. The official eligible categories table, sourced to ICP and updated in March 2026, sets out durations and describes the requirements in the terms above without naming a numeric cut-off. Universities and the emirate residency authorities apply their own nomination criteria underneath that, which is where the specific numbers people quote come from. Ask your university what its nomination threshold is, rather than assuming a national one.
The distinction between the two durations is worth planning around. A strong secondary school result produces a 5-year visa; the 10-year visa is tied to university performance. Both remove the dependence on a sponsor, which is the real prize, because it converts a one-year renewable study permission into long-term residence that survives graduation. Our guides to Golden Visa eligibility and application and to who actually qualifies in 2026 cover the wider category set and the persistent myths around it.
What Happens When You Graduate
A student visa is contingent on study. When the study ends, the basis for renewal ends with it, and the visa runs only to its existing expiry date.
There is no automatic post-study work visa in the UAE equivalent to the graduate routes in the UK or Australia. What exists instead are three distinct exits. The first is an employer: a company hires you and applies for a work permit, at which point your status changes. The second is the jobseeker visit visa, which allows a stay for the purpose of looking for work without a sponsor, and which our guide to moving to the UAE without a job offer compares against the other sponsor-free routes. The third is the outstanding student Golden Visa above, which is the only one of the three you can position for years in advance.
If the visa is cancelled rather than allowed to expire, a grace period applies before the stay becomes an overstay, and the rules differ by category. Those are covered in our guide to the grace period after visa cancellation. Students who leave the country for extended periods between terms should also read the 180-day rule, because a residence visa can lapse on absence alone.
The Sequence, Step by Step
- Secure the offer and confirm the institution is accredited. The visa route depends on the college or university being accredited, and the sponsorship is only available through an accredited institution.
- Decide the sponsor. If a parent already holds UAE residence, the dependant route is usually simpler and cheaper. If not, the institution sponsors. If a son will pass 25 during the programme, plan on the enrolment evidence carrying the renewal.
- Get the enrolment certificate specifying the duration of study. This is the one document unique to the student route, and it must state the duration, not merely confirm registration.
- Complete the general residence requirements. Medical fitness test, biometrics and Emirates ID, and health insurance, in the order the institution or the residency authority directs.
- Sort work legally before you start earning. For tutoring, apply for the private teacher work permit yourself, free, valid two years. For anything else, the employer files a student training and employment permit or a part-time work permit. Nothing else is lawful.
- Diarize the renewal. The visa runs one year at a time and needs fresh proof of continuing study each time, so request the letter before the expiry month rather than during it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a UAE student visa valid?
One year at a time. The official position is that a student visa is given for a duration of one year, renewable for a similar period on proof of continuation of study issued by the educational institute. There is no multi-year student residence permit in the standard route, so the enrolment letter is needed at every renewal.
Who can sponsor a student visa in the UAE?
Either a parent who is already a UAE resident, or the accredited university or college the student attends. Universities run the process through their student affairs offices. The choice is normally dictated by whether the family already lives in the UAE rather than by preference, and the two routes carry different age rules.
Can my son stay on my UAE visa after he turns 25 if he is studying?
Yes, if he provides evidence of attending a higher educational institute. Expatriate residents can sponsor male children up to 25 as a matter of course; beyond that age the enrolment evidence becomes the entire basis for the sponsorship. An earlier version of the official guidance specified a minimum of one year’s course, so a full degree programme is a stronger basis than a short certificate.
Is there an age limit for sponsoring a daughter to study in the UAE?
No. Expatriate residents may continue to sponsor female children for study regardless of their age, until she is married. That is a materially different rule from the one applied to sons, and it is stated in those terms on the government’s own residence visa pages.
Can students work part-time in the UAE?
Only under a MOHRE permit. Article 6 of Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021 makes working without a valid work permit illegal for the worker and for the employer. The student training and employment permit is valid for three months, and Ministerial Decree 519 of 2018 frames student employment around academic holidays, for a maximum of three consecutive months each time. The widely repeated figure of 20 hours a week during term time does not appear in the official material.
How can a university student in the UAE legally earn money tutoring?
Through MOHRE’s private teacher work permit. School students aged 15 to 18 and university students may apply through the MOHRE application, website or digital channels, and the permit is granted free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution 710 of 2023. Tutoring without the permit exposes the individual to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.
Do students get end-of-service gratuity in the UAE?
No, unless the contract says so. The official guidance on the student regime states that the trained or employed student is not entitled to end-of-service gratuity or any other leaves except as stipulated in the contract. If paid leave or a termination payment matters to you, it has to be negotiated into the written contract at the start.
Can a student in the UAE bring their family?
The government states that family members of foreign students studying at UAE universities may stay in the UAE as long as they can afford suitable housing, a measure introduced to support the students’ stability. The published condition is housing capacity rather than a salary threshold. Confirm the current application route with your university’s student affairs office and the residency authority, because the wording is broad and implementation sits with them.
What GPA do you need for the UAE outstanding student Golden Visa?
The government’s own eligible categories table does not publish a grade threshold. It lists the requirements as certificates of excellence and recommendation letters from the school or university, with 5 years for high school achievers and 10 years for top university students. Specific grade cut-offs come from individual universities’ nomination criteria, so ask your institution what standard it applies.
Is there a post-study work visa in the UAE?
Not as a dedicated graduate route. A student visa depends on continuing study, so when the programme ends the renewal basis ends. The realistic exits are an employer sponsoring a work permit, the jobseeker visit visa which allows a stay to look for work without a sponsor, or the outstanding student Golden Visa, which is the only one you can position for while still studying.

Information is current as of August 2026. Limitations are stated rather than smoothed over. No student visa fee is quoted here, because fees differ between ICP and the emirate residency authorities and no single official schedule covers both. The student training and employment page was last updated by the government in June 2022 and the student visa sub-page in July 2024, so both should be re-checked before relying on them; the residence visa for study parent page was updated in February 2026 and is followed where the two differ. The family-of-students provision is published as a policy statement without a documented application procedure, so it is presented as a route to confirm rather than a guaranteed entitlement.
