For drivers with a Sharjah or Ajman plate, or anyone caught by a camera in either emirate: where to check a traffic fine by plate number or Emirates ID, how to pay it, what the early-payment discounts are worth, and what happens to an impounded car.
You check and pay Sharjah and Ajman traffic fines through the Ministry of Interior (MOI): the MOI UAE app or moi.gov.ae, searching by plate number, traffic file number or licence. MOI does not charge a fee to pay a fine. In Sharjah, a standing rule gives 35% off if you pay within 60 days and 25% off within one year, except for serious violations. Ajman has no published standing discount but runs 50% campaigns, most recently from 4 November to 15 December 2024.
Parking tickets are a separate system. In Sharjah and Ajman, the municipality issues them, not the police, and you check and pay them elsewhere. This guide covers police traffic fines, and links to our Sharjah and Ajman parking guide for parking fines. It draws on the Sharjah Executive Council’s discount decision, Sharjah Police’s published FAQ and the Ministry of Interior’s service cards.
Who Issues Traffic Fines in Sharjah and Ajman?
| Fine type | Sharjah | Ajman | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traffic violations (speeding, red lights, phone use, seatbelts) | Sharjah Police | Ajman Police | MOI UAE app, moi.gov.ae, police service centers |
| Public parking tickets | Sharjah City Municipality | Ajman Municipality and Planning Department | Sharjah Municipality site and app; MPDA app |
Traffic fines follow one federal law, so the main amounts and black points are the same in every emirate. What each emirate controls is enforcement, impoundment yards and discounts. That is why Sharjah and Ajman discounts differ from Dubai’s and Abu Dhabi’s.
How to Check Sharjah and Ajman Traffic Fines
The UAE Government portal lists the Ministry of Interior website, Emirates Vehicle Gate and the MOI smart app as the channels for checking and paying fines across the emirates (u.ae, Traffic fines, updated 22 May 2025). Sharjah and Ajman have no separate portal for police fines. Their fines sit in the federal traffic system that MOI runs.
By Plate Number
- Open the MOI UAE app or the traffic fines service on moi.gov.ae.
- Choose the fine inquiry by plate (vehicle) option.
- Select the emirate on the plate (Sharjah or Ajman), the plate category and code, then enter the number.
- The results list each unpaid fine with date, place, amount and any black points. Select the fines and pay.
A plate search shows fines registered against the vehicle, wherever in the UAE they were issued. If you are buying a used car, run this check on the seller’s plate before you pay.
By Emirates ID or Traffic File Number
Log in to the MOI app with UAE Pass to see the fines and black points on your own traffic file, including those on every vehicle registered to you. Your traffic file number (T.C. No.) is printed on your driving licence. This is the better check if you drive several cars or a company car, because fines tied to your licence follow you, not the vehicle.
Other Channels
- Ajman Police app, Sahl kiosks and Ajman Police service centers: named by Ajman Police as payment channels during its discount campaigns (Gulf News, reporting Ajman Police, November 2024).
- Sharjah Police service centers: for payment in person, and for anything the app cannot handle, such as merging traffic files. Sharjah Police says customer details are updated and traffic files merged at a Vehicles and Drivers’ Licensing Service Center (Sharjah Police FAQ).
- Dubai RTA and Dubai Police channels also show fines from other emirates on Dubai-registered cars. See our Dubai traffic fines guide.
How to Pay
The Ministry of Interior’s “Payment of Traffic Fines” service has four channels: customer happiness centers at the traffic and licensing department, the website, the smart app, and self-service machines. The website and app run 24/7 and take Visa, Mastercard and e-Dirham. MOI lists no federal or local fee for the payment service itself (Ministry of Interior, Payment of Traffic Fines).
If you paid a fine twice, paid one by mistake, or paid a fine that belonged to a car’s previous owner, Sharjah Police will process a refund. You need the violation details, your Emirates ID, a bank account letter, and the company license or a power of attorney where relevant (Sharjah Police FAQ).
Sharjah’s Early-Payment Discount: 35% and 25%
On 8 July 2025 the Sharjah Executive Council approved a standing discount on traffic fines (Sharjah Executive Council):
| When you pay | Discount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Within 60 days of the violation | 35% | The fine, the impoundment period, vehicle storage fees and any late penalties |
| After 60 days, within one year | 25% | The fine only |
| After one year | None | Full amount |
Serious traffic violations are excluded. Sharjah Police has said about 40 serious violations do not qualify. Examples it gave include truck offences, pedestrian-crossing violations, excessive speeding, running a red light, using a mobile phone while driving, sudden stopping on the road and distracted driving (Gulf News, reporting Sharjah Police, July 2025). The full list has not been published.
Worked example: a AED 400 seatbelt fine paid on day 30 costs AED 260. The same fine paid on day 90 costs AED 300. After a year it costs the full AED 400.
The rule covers Sharjah Police traffic fines. It does not cover Sharjah City Municipality parking fines, which follow their own rules.
Ajman Discounts: Campaigns, Not a Standing Rule
Ajman Police has not published a standing early-payment discount that we could verify. Some online guides claim one, but we found no official decision behind it. What Ajman does run is time-limited 50% campaigns, usually announced around UAE National Day:
| Campaign | Fines covered | Payment window |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 (latest) | Issued in Ajman before 31 October 2024 | 4 November to 15 December 2024 |
Earlier 50% campaigns ran in other years, including one for the UAE’s Golden Jubilee in November 2021 (Gulf Today, November 2021).
The 2024 campaign also cancelled vehicle impoundments and traffic points on qualifying fines. It excluded serious violations: reckless driving that endangers road users, wrong overtaking by truck drivers, exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h, modifying a vehicle without permission, and jumping a red light (Gulf News, reporting Ajman Police). The discount applies only to fines issued in Ajman, even if your car is registered elsewhere.
If you have older Ajman fines and no deadline is pressing, waiting for the next National Day announcement can halve them. If your registration renewal is due, you will have to pay the full amount.
Impoundment in Sharjah
Some violations carry impoundment as well as a fine. Sharjah Police’s published answers set out how it works (Sharjah Police FAQ):
- Where: at the Al Labsah yard, or by smart (home) impoundment.
- Smart impoundment: a tracking device is fitted for AED 10 a day. The car can be kept somewhere other than home, as long as it is a private parking space.
- Buying out the period: AED 100 for each day of impoundment.
- Maximum period: 30 days.
Paying within 60 days also brings the 35% discount on the impoundment period and storage fees.
Getting the Car Released
The Ministry of Interior issues a Certificate for Releasing Impounded Vehicles for a AED 100 federal fee. Its conditions: the traffic fines in the relevant emirate are paid, the impoundment period has ended, and the owner or a legal representative attends in person (Ministry of Interior, Issuing Certificate for Releasing Impounded Vehicles).
Black Points
Most moving violations add black points to your licence as well as a fine. Sharjah Police says points more than a year old are erased if you have not reached the cumulative limit (Sharjah Police FAQ). Reaching the limit suspends your licence. The thresholds and suspension periods are the same federally, and are set out in our Dubai traffic fines guide.
One fine Sharjah Police quotes directly: letting a child under ten sit in the front seat costs AED 400 and 4 black points (Sharjah Police FAQ).
What Happens If You Do Not Pay
All traffic fines have to be paid before you can renew a driving licence or a vehicle registration (Mulkiya) (u.ae, Traffic fines). A Sharjah or Ajman fine stops a renewal in Dubai or Abu Dhabi just as it would at home. That is usually when people discover fines they did not know about. Run a check a month before renewal, so you can still pay inside Sharjah’s 60-day window if a recent fine appears. Our UAE annual renewal calendar shows when each renewal falls. Before renewing, a car three years or older also needs a passing test; our vehicle inspection guide by emirate covers the Sharjah and Ajman testing centers and fees.
Fines also block a vehicle sale. The transfer cannot complete until the car is clear, so a buyer should insist on a clean fines check. See how to sell a car in the UAE.
If You Think a Fine Is Wrong
An objection goes to the police force of the emirate that issued the fine, not the emirate where your car is registered. For a Sharjah fine, use Sharjah Police’s complaints service on its website, or visit a service center with the violation details and any evidence. Sharjah Police handles service and payment issues by email at [email protected] and says it answers within one business day (Sharjah Police FAQ). For an Ajman fine, go to an Ajman Police service center. A parking ticket from either municipality is contested with the municipality instead, as explained in our parking guide.
