Where you apply for an Italy visa in the UAE depends on which emirate issued your residence visa, and getting that wrong is the most common reason an appointment is wasted. Residents with a Dubai or Northern Emirates residence visa apply through VFS Global at The Gate, DIFC. Residents with an Abu Dhabi residence visa apply through BLS International in Abu Dhabi. The standard Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, plus the visa center’s service charge.
This guide covers who needs a visa, where to apply by emirate, the fees, the documents, the proof-of-funds amounts Italy publishes, processing times, and the 2026 service interruptions that UAE applicants should know about.
Key Takeaways
- An Italian short-stay visa is a Schengen visa. It allows up to 90 days in Italy and the other Schengen countries.
- Dubai and Northern Emirates residents apply through VFS Global at The Gate Avenue, DIFC, for the Consulate General in Dubai.
- Abu Dhabi residents, including Al Ain and Al Dhafra, apply through BLS International at Nation Towers Mall for the Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
- The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 pay nothing.
- Apply at least 15 days and no more than 6 months before travel. Normal processing is 15 days, extendable to 45.
- Italy publishes minimum daily funds. A solo 7-day trip needs proof of at least €314.51.
Do You Need a Visa for Italy?
Whether you need a visa depends on your passport, not your UAE residence. The EU keeps one list of countries whose citizens need a visa for all Schengen states, and a UAE residence visa does not change that.
| Passport | Italy short visit |
|---|---|
| UAE, UK, US, Canada, Australia, EU and other visa-exempt countries | No visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180 |
| India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Nigeria, Jordan, Lebanon, China and other visa-required countries | Schengen visa before travel |
| Spouses and certain relatives of EU citizens | Free visa, handled with priority |
Confirm your own case on Italy’s Visa for Italy portal, which asks four questions about nationality, residence, purpose and length of stay, then lists the documents.
Where to Apply: It Depends on Your Emirate
Italy splits the UAE between two missions, and each accepts only residents of its own area. Under the Schengen rules, you apply at the consulate with territorial responsibility for where you legally reside.
| Residence visa issued by | Mission | Where you submit |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah | Consulate General of Italy, Dubai | VFS Global, The Gate Avenue, Zone C, Level 1, Units 166 and 168, DIFC |
| Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra) | Embassy of Italy, Abu Dhabi | BLS International, Nation Towers Mall, Abu Dhabi |
The Dubai consulate states that to apply in Dubai, your UAE residence visa must have been issued by one of the Northern Emirates. The Abu Dhabi embassy says its visa office is exclusively responsible for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and directs Dubai and Northern Emirates residents to the Dubai consulate.
What counts is the emirate on your residence visa, not where you live. Someone who lives in Dubai on an Abu Dhabi-issued visa applies in Abu Dhabi. If you are not sure which emirate issued yours, our guide to Abu Dhabi versus Dubai residence visas explains how to tell.
Dubai and Northern Emirates: VFS Global
The consulate outsources tourist and business visas to VFS Global, contactable on 04 205 5777 or [email protected]. Book through the VFS portal. Business visa applicants get dedicated appointment slots.
Long-stay national visas for study, employment, self-employment, medical treatment or elective residence are not handled by VFS. For those, email the consulate’s visa office at [email protected].
Abu Dhabi: BLS International
Abu Dhabi applicants book tourist visa appointments on the BLS portal. Business visa applicants can walk in without an appointment. The center accepts applications Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and returns passports from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The embassy adds that BLS extras, including its premium lounge, are optional and not required to submit an application.
Schengen Visa Fees
The EU sets the visa fee for all Schengen states. The visa center adds its own service charge, which is not set by Italy.
| Applicant | Visa fee |
|---|---|
| Adults | €90 |
| Children aged 6 to 12 | €45 |
| Children under 6 | Free |
| Schengen visa for study | Free |
| Qualifying family members of EU citizens | Free |
The adult and child amounts come from the European Commission’s Schengen visa page. The free categories are listed by the Consulate General in Dubai, which also notes that applications made directly at the consulate are paid in cash only.
Documents You Need
The core list is the same for every Schengen country. The Commission’s application requirements are:
- Passport valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.
- Application form, completed and signed. The forms are free.
- Photo meeting ICAO standards.
- Travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalization and repatriation, with minimum cover of €30,000 under Article 15 of the EU Visa Code.
- Supporting documents for the purpose of your trip, your accommodation, your financial means and your intention to return.
- Fingerprints, taken when you submit the application.
For a UAE resident, “intention to return” usually means a valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, a salary certificate or trade license, and recent bank statements. Our guide to travel insurance for Schengen visas explains what a compliant policy must cover and whether your UAE health insurance counts.
How Much Money You Must Show
Italy is one of the few Schengen states that publishes exact minimum funds. A directive of the Interior Ministry dated 1 March 2000 sets the amounts, and the Polizia di Stato publishes the table for tourism, business and other short visits. You can prove it with cash, bank guarantees, prepaid services or proof of income available in Italy.
| Length of trip | One traveler | Two or more travelers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 days (flat total) | €269.60 | €212.81 |
| 6 to 10 days (per person per day) | €44.93 | €26.33 |
| 11 to 20 days | €51.64 fixed + €36.67 per day | €25.82 fixed + €22.21 per day |
| More than 20 days | €206.58 fixed + €27.89 per day | €118.79 fixed + €17.04 per day |
Worked examples for a solo traveler:
- 7 days: 7 × €44.93 = €314.51
- 14 days: €51.64 + (14 × €36.67) = €565.02
- 25 days: €206.58 + (25 × €27.89) = €903.83
These are minimums. A bank statement showing only the minimum, against a long itinerary, invites questions, so most applicants show well above it.
When to Apply and How Long It Takes
You must apply at least 15 days before travel and no earlier than 6 months before. The normal decision time is 15 days, which can stretch to 45 days if the consulate needs more documents.
Apply early for summer and the December holidays, when appointment slots in Dubai fill weeks ahead. If you are planning around UAE public holidays, our 2027 public holidays leave planner shows which dates bridge into long breaks.
Should you apply to Italy or another country?
Apply to Italy if Italy is your sole or main destination, meaning where you spend the most nights. If you split the trip equally between countries, apply to the country you enter first. Applying to Italy for a trip that is mostly in France is a common reason for refusal.
2026 Service Interruptions in the UAE
Italian visa services in the UAE were disrupted twice in early 2026. The consulate announced that the EU’s VIS system would be suspended from 12 to 18 February 2026, halting applications and visa issuance at both the consulate and VFS.
In March, after restrictions linked to regional instability, the consulate said visa services would gradually resume from 23 March 2026, including the business visa applications that had been suspended. It added that the service remains subject to change. Check the consulate’s news page before booking flights against a tight visa timeline.
At the Border and During Your Stay
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. It records your entries and exits digitally, with fingerprints and a facial image, in place of passport stamps. Your 90 days in any 180 are counted across all Schengen states.
Italy also requires tourists to declare their presence. The Visa for Italy portal says a hotel registration counts as that declaration. If you arrive from another Schengen country and stay privately, you must declare at the local Questura within 8 days.
A visa does not guarantee entry. Border officers can still ask to see your funds, accommodation and return ticket, so carry copies of what you submitted.
