Based on ICP’s published rules: a fine of AED 50 for each day of stay after a visit visa’s permitted stay ends, after the 60 days allowed to complete residence on an entry permit, or after the residence grace period ends (180, 90, 60 or 30 days by category). How the UAE Overstay Fine Is Calculated

  • The rate is AED 50 a day. ICP charges AED 50 for each day of stay in the country after a visa has expired or been cancelled (ICP, Renewal of residency permits).
  • Visit and tourist visas: the fine applies from the day after the permitted stay ends. ICP lists “expiry of the permitted stay period” at AED 50 per day and names no grace period (ICP, Issuance of a Visa).
  • Entry permits for residence: you have 60 days from the date of entry to complete the residence. If it is not finalized in that time, overstay fines apply (ICP, Issuance of a Visa).
  • Residence visas: the fine starts on the day after your grace period ends, and the grace period depends on your residence type (ICP, Cancellation of residency permits).
  • The fine stops when you leave the UAE or regularize your status, for example with a new residence. It must be paid before an exit permit is issued (GDRFA, Issuance of a Departure Permit).

Grace Periods by Residence Category

ICP grants these grace periods after a residence permit expires or is cancelled (ICP):

Residence category Grace period Fine starts on
Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their families; widows or divorced women of residents; students after completing their studies; foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens 180 days Day 181
Skilled workers at MOHRE levels 1 to 3; property owners 90 days Day 91
Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host 60 days Day 61
All other categories 30 days Day 31

ICP does not spell out whether an ordinary employment residence counts as issued with a guarantor (60 days) or falls under all other categories (30 days). Your skill level is printed on your MOHRE work permit, and the grace date for your own file appears in the ICP or GDRFA app. If you cannot confirm it, plan around 30 days. Our guide to the UAE residence visa grace period after cancellation covers what you can do inside that window.

Worked Examples

Situation Dates Days overstayed Fine
Visit visa, no grace period Last permitted day 10 Oct 2026, leaves 22 Oct 2026 12 AED 600
Dubai employment residence, all other categories (30 days) Cancelled 1 Sep 2026, last fine-free day 1 Oct, leaves 15 Oct 2026 14 AED 700 (AED 941 with a GDRFA exit permit)
Skilled worker, MOHRE level 2 (90 days) Cancelled 1 Jul 2026, last fine-free day 29 Sep, leaves 9 Oct 2026 10 AED 500

The calculator counts each day after the last fine-free day up to and including your leaving date. The authority’s system may count the first or last day differently, so treat a one-day difference as possible and pay the amount shown on your file.

How to Pay the Fine and Leave

  • Dubai visas: GDRFA’s Fine Collection for Violators of Residency Law service charges no service fee, only the fines.
  • Dubai exit permit: GDRFA’s departure permit costs AED 241 and takes about 48 hours. You need a ticket departing within 7 days, you must leave within 7 days of issue, and all outstanding fines must be paid first (GDRFA). Read more in our UAE exit permit (out pass) guide.
  • Other emirates: visas issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are handled by ICP through its app, website and customer happiness centers.

Can the Fine Be Reduced or Waived?

GDRFA’s Exemption from fines for violators of Residence Law service lets you ask for the fine to be waived or reduced. You submit a copy of the passport, a letter explaining the reasons for the violation and your inability to pay, and any documents the Fines Committee asks for. A fee of AED 15.75 applies where the sponsor is an individual. The decision is discretionary. Amnesty programs also waive fines, but only while one is officially open, so do not delay leaving in the hope of one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the overstay fine in the UAE per day?

AED 50 for each day you stay after your visa or grace period ends. ICP applies the same AED 50 daily fine to visit visas, entry permits and residence visas.

When does the overstay fine start for a cancelled residence visa?

From the day after your grace period ends. ICP gives 180 days to Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and some other groups, 90 days to skilled workers at MOHRE levels 1 to 3 and property owners, 60 days to residence issued with a guarantor or host, and 30 days to all other categories.

Is there a grace period after a UAE visit visa expires?

ICP’s current visa service page lists the AED 50 daily fine from the end of the permitted stay and does not mention a grace period for visit visas. Extend the visa or leave before the last permitted day.

How much is an exit permit in Dubai?

GDRFA charges AED 241 for a departure (exit) permit. It takes about 48 hours, you need a ticket departing within 7 days, and all fines must be paid before it is issued.

Can a UAE overstay fine be waived?

Sometimes. GDRFA runs an exemption service where you can ask the Fines Committee to reduce or waive the fine, with a letter explaining the reasons and your inability to pay. ICP handles requests for visas issued in other emirates. Approval is discretionary.
