Salik toll Dubai

Complete guide to Dubai’s electronic toll system — variable pricing, registration, fines, toll-free hours, and routes without Salik

Every vehicle driving through Dubai’s main highways passes under at least one Salik toll gate, and since January 31, 2025, the system charges variable rates from AED 4 to AED 6 depending on the time of day. Dubai operates ten Salik gates across Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Ittihad Road, and key creek crossings, with late-night travel (1:00 AM–6:00 AM) completely toll-free. Whether you are a new resident setting up your first Salik account, a tourist renting a car, or a daily commuter looking to reduce toll costs, understanding how the system works prevents unnecessary fines and keeps your driving expenses predictable.

This guide covers how Salik works, all ten gate locations, the current variable pricing schedule, how to buy and activate a tag, recharge options, fines and grace periods, toll exemptions, and practical strategies for driving through Dubai toll-free or at reduced cost.

What Is Salik and How Does It Work?

Salik (Arabic for “clear” or “open”) is Dubai’s barrier-free electronic toll system, launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on 1 July 2007. There are no toll booths, barriers, or manual payments — vehicles pass through overhead gantries at normal highway speed while Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology reads the tag on the windscreen and deducts the toll from the driver’s prepaid account.

The system requires a physical Salik tag (a passive RFID sticker) affixed to the inside of the vehicle’s windscreen, approximately 1 cm below the rear-view mirror. Each tag is linked to a specific vehicle and cannot be transferred between cars. When the vehicle passes under a Salik gate, the sensor communicates with the tag and deducts the applicable toll from the account balance. Drivers receive SMS notifications for each transaction and for low-balance alerts.

Salik is managed by Salik Company PJSC, established as a public joint stock company in July 2022. The company operates exclusively within Dubai — other emirates have separate toll systems (Abu Dhabi uses the Darb system). Salik tags are not valid for Darb gates and vice versa.

All Ten Salik Toll Gate Locations in Dubai

Dubai currently operates ten Salik toll gates positioned on major highways and creek crossings. Two new gates — Al Safa South and Business Bay Crossing — became operational in November 2024, expanding the network from eight to ten.

Gate Name Road Key Landmarks / Notes
Al Barsha Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) Before Mall of the Emirates
Al Safa North Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) Near Al Safa Park / Jumeirah area
Al Safa South Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) Between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street (activated November 2024)
Jebel Ali Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) Near Energy Metro Station / Ibn Battuta Mall
Al Garhoud Bridge Sheikh Rashid Road Creek crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai, near Dubai Airport
Al Maktoum Bridge Umm Hurair Road Creek crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai
Al Mamzar North Al Ittihad Road (E11) Near Al Mamzar Beach Park, Dubai–Sharjah corridor
Al Mamzar South Al Ittihad Road (E11) South of Al Mamzar North, same corridor
Airport Tunnel Beirut Street Near Dubai International Airport
Business Bay Crossing Al Khail Road Business Bay area (activated November 2024)

Sheikh Zayed Road alone has four gates (Al Barsha, Al Safa North, Al Safa South, and Jebel Ali), making it the most toll-intensive route in Dubai. Commuters travelling the full length of this highway can pass through multiple gates in a single trip.

Salik Toll Rates: Variable Pricing Since January 2025

On 31 January 2025, Salik replaced the long-standing flat AED 4 per crossing with a variable toll pricing system designed to redistribute traffic away from rush hours. Tolls now range from free to AED 6 depending on when you cross a gate.

Standard Variable Rates (Monday–Saturday)

Time Window Category Toll Per Crossing
6:00 AM – 10:00 AM Peak AED 6
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Off-peak AED 4
4:00 PM – 8:00 PM Peak AED 6
8:00 PM – 1:00 AM Off-peak AED 4
1:00 AM – 6:00 AM Toll-free AED 0

Sunday Rates

Sundays carry a flat rate of AED 4 per crossing throughout the day, except during the late-night toll-free window (1:00 AM–6:00 AM), which remains free. This flat Sunday rate does not apply during public holidays or major events, when the standard variable pricing may be reinstated — Salik announces adjustments in advance through its official channels.

Ramadan Rates

During the holy month of Ramadan, the variable pricing schedule shifts to accommodate different travel patterns:

  • Peak hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM — AED 6 per crossing
  • Off-peak hours: 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM – 2:00 AM — AED 4 per crossing
  • Toll-free hours: 2:00 AM – 7:00 AM — AED 0

The One-Hour Rule: Al Mamzar and Al Safa Gate Pairs

Two pairs of gates offer a cost-saving mechanism. If you pass through both Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South in the same direction within one hour, you are charged only once (AED 4 or AED 6 depending on the time). The same rule applies to the Al Safa North and Al Safa South gate pair. This prevents double-charging for drivers who necessarily pass through both gates on Al Ittihad Road or Sheikh Zayed Road during a single continuous journey.

No Daily or Monthly Cap

There is no upper limit on daily or monthly Salik charges. The previous AED 24 daily cap (six crossings maximum) was removed in July 2013. Every crossing is now charged individually regardless of how many gates a vehicle passes through in a day.

How to Get a Salik Tag: Purchase, Registration, and Activation

Every vehicle that drives through any of Dubai’s ten Salik gates must have a registered and activated tag. The process differs slightly depending on whether you buy online or in person.

Buying Online

The total cost of a Salik tag purchased online through the official Salik website is AED 120, which includes AED 50 for the tag, AED 50 in prepaid toll credit, and AED 20 for delivery (inclusive of VAT). Tags bought online are activated automatically upon purchase — no separate activation step is required. Delivery typically takes up to five working days.

Steps:

  1. Visit salik.ae and select “Purchase Salik Tag”
  2. Enter your vehicle registration card details and mobile number
  3. Verify your mobile number via one-time SMS password
  4. Provide a delivery address and complete payment
  5. Receive confirmation SMS — tag ships within five working days

Online purchase is available only for vehicles registered in the UAE under private and motorcycle plate categories.

Buying In Person

The total cost at authorised retail agents is AED 100, which includes AED 50 for the tag and AED 50 in prepaid toll credit. Tags purchased in person must be activated separately before first use.

Authorised purchase points include petrol stations operated by ENOC, EPPCO, Emarat, and ADNOC across Dubai. The Careem app also offers Salik tag purchases. Vehicles registered outside the UAE can only purchase tags through authorised sales agents — not online.

Activation for In-Person Purchases

Activate through any of the following channels:

  • Salik website — select “Activate Salik Tag” and follow the prompts
  • Smart Salik app — available on iOS and Android
  • Dubai Drive app — RTA’s multi-service transport app
  • Salik call centre — 800 72545 (800 SALIK), available 24/7

Documents needed for activation:

  • Vehicle registration card (front and back)
  • Salik tag number (printed on the back of the tag)
  • Mobile phone number registered to the Salik account

Tag Installation

Place the tag on the inside of the windscreen, approximately 1 cm below the rear-view mirror. If the windscreen has metallic tinting, position the tag on the dotted or lighter area in the centre of the tint strip. Clean the glass thoroughly before attaching, peel the transparent liner from the adhesive side, and press firmly to avoid air bubbles.

How to Recharge Your Salik Account

Salik operates on a prepaid basis — the account must have sufficient balance before passing through a gate. The minimum recharge amount is AED 50, and the maximum is AED 50,000 per transaction (in multiples of 50).

Recharge methods:

  • Salik website or Smart Salik app — credit/debit card payment, instant balance update
  • Dubai Drive app — integrated Salik recharge feature
  • Auto-recharge — set up through your bank or via the Salik portal to automatically top up when the balance drops below a chosen threshold
  • SMS — send recharge card details to 5959 (30 fils operator fee applies)
  • Bank apps — many UAE banks include Salik recharge within their mobile banking
  • Cash deposit machines — available at Emirates NBD and Dubai Islamic Bank
  • Petrol stations — purchase recharge cards at ENOC, EPPCO, Emarat, ADNOC outlets

Auto-recharge is strongly recommended for daily commuters. It eliminates the risk of passing a gate with insufficient funds and incurring fines.

Salik Fines: Penalties, Grace Periods, and How to Check Violations

Non-compliance with Salik rules results in escalating fines. According to the official Salik FAQ, the penalty structure is as follows:

Insufficient Balance

If your Salik account does not have enough credit when you pass through a gate, you have a grace period of five working days from the date of the trip to recharge. If the account is not topped up within this window, a fine of AED 50 is imposed. This fine applies per day the vehicle continues to pass through gates without sufficient balance, but is capped at one violation per day regardless of how many gates are crossed.

No Registered Salik Tag

If a vehicle passes through a Salik gate without any registered tag, the driver has ten working days from the date of the first trip to purchase, activate, and install a tag. Failure to do so triggers escalating fines:

Violation Fine Notes
First crossing (after 10-day grace period) AED 100 Maximum one violation per day
Second crossing AED 200 Maximum one violation per day
Each subsequent crossing AED 400 Maximum one violation per day
Tampering with a Salik tag AED 10,000 Manipulation, fraud, or misuse
Damaging Salik infrastructure AED 10,000 Gates, recharge machines, or company assets

Unpaid Salik fines can block vehicle registration renewal. All violations must be cleared before renewing your vehicle’s registration with RTA.

How to Check and Pay Salik Fines

There are several channels to check for outstanding violations:

  • Salik website — log in and navigate to the Violations section
  • Smart Salik app — view and pay fines directly
  • Dubai Drive app (RTA) — Services > Salik > Violations
  • Dubai Police website or app — traffic fines section includes Salik violations
  • Tasjeel (vehicle registration) centres — in-person check and payment

Salik does not always send proactive fine notifications. Regular manual checks are recommended, particularly after driving on unfamiliar routes.

Salik Exemptions: Who Drives Toll-Free in Dubai?

Certain vehicle categories are exempt from Salik tolls, as confirmed by the UAE Government Portal and Salik’s exemption service page:

  • People of Determination — one vehicle per person, renewable annually. The vehicle must be owned by the person of determination or a first- or second-degree relative. Requires a valid People of Determination card (Ministry of Community Empowerment) or Sanad card (Community Development Authority), Emirates ID, and vehicle registration card. Apply through salik.ae or by contacting 800 SALIK.
  • Public buses — RTA-operated public transport buses
  • Emergency vehicles — ambulances, fire engines
  • Military and police vehicles
  • School and college buses

Taxis are not exempt. Taxi passengers pay an additional AED 4–6 (depending on the time) added to the metered fare for each Salik gate crossed during the trip.

Electric Vehicle Tag Benefit

Owners of 100% electric vehicles can obtain a free Salik tag from RTA — the AED 100 tag cost is waived. However, electric vehicles are not exempt from toll charges. Standard variable rates apply at all gates. The free tag is available at Salik customer service centres upon submission of the vehicle’s registration card showing electric vehicle classification.

How to Pass Through Salik Toll Gates for Free in Dubai

While there is no way to avoid charges completely for regular vehicles during most hours, several legitimate strategies allow drivers to reduce or eliminate toll costs on specific journeys.

Drive During Toll-Free Hours (1:00 AM – 6:00 AM)

Every Salik gate in Dubai is toll-free between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM, seven days a week. During Ramadan, the toll-free window extends to 2:00 AM–7:00 AM. This applies to all ten gates with no exceptions. Airport drop-offs, late-night returns, or early-morning commutes during these hours cost nothing in tolls.

Use Toll-Free Alternative Routes

Several major roads in Dubai have no Salik gates. While these routes may add time to your journey, they eliminate toll costs entirely:

  • Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) — runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and bypasses the Al Barsha, Al Safa, and Jebel Ali gates. Suitable for travel between Jebel Ali / Dubai Marina and areas like Mirdif, Academic City, or Silicon Oasis without crossing a single toll gate.
  • Al Khail Road (E44) — connects Business Bay, DIFC, and Al Quoz areas to Motor City, Sports City, and Dubai South without Salik tolls on most stretches. Note: the new Business Bay Crossing gate (activated November 2024) is on Al Khail Road at the Business Bay crossing point, so plan accordingly.
  • Emirates Road (E611) — an outer bypass connecting Abu Dhabi-bound traffic to the Northern Emirates without entering central Dubai.
  • Floating Bridge — connects Al Ittihad Road in Deira with Al Riyadh Street in Bur Dubai. An alternative to the Al Garhoud Bridge and Al Maktoum Bridge Salik gates for creek crossings. Note: the Floating Bridge closes during certain late-night hours for marine traffic.

Travel on Sundays at Flat Rate

Sunday is the cheapest day to drive through Salik gates (apart from late-night hours). The flat AED 4 rate applies all day, saving AED 2 per crossing compared to peak-hour weekday rates. Scheduling errands, shopping trips, or non-urgent travel for Sundays reduces cumulative toll expenses.

Use the One-Hour Rule at Paired Gates

If your route takes you through both Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South (or Al Safa North and Al Safa South) in the same direction, pass through both within one hour to be charged only once. This effectively halves the toll for that stretch of road.

Use Public Transport on Toll Routes

Dubai Metro, tram, and public buses are not subject to Salik charges. The Metro Red Line runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road, covering the same corridor as four Salik gates. For commuters whose daily route crosses multiple gates, combining Metro travel with a car (park-and-ride at Metro stations) can eliminate toll costs on the most expensive segments.

Salik vs Abu Dhabi’s Darb Toll System

Drivers who commute between Dubai and Abu Dhabi need to manage two separate toll systems. Salik tags do not work on Darb gates, and Darb accounts do not work on Salik gates.

Feature Salik (Dubai) Darb (Abu Dhabi)
Number of gates 10 4 (bridges to Abu Dhabi Island)
Physical tag required Yes (RFID sticker) No (plate number recognition)
Peak rate AED 6 AED 4
Toll-free hours 1:00 AM – 6:00 AM daily Outside peak hours (evenings, nights, Sundays)
Operator Salik Company PJSC Q Mobility (ITC)

Common Mistakes That Lead to Salik Fines

Several easily avoidable errors account for most Salik violations:

  • Forgetting to update the tag after selling a vehicle. If you sell your car without removing the tag and deactivating it from your account, any tolls or fines incurred by the new owner will be charged to your account. Remove and discard the old tag, then delete the vehicle from your Salik account immediately upon sale.
  • Incorrect tag placement. A tag placed too far from the recommended position behind the rear-view mirror, or on metallic-tinted glass without using the designated clear strip, may not be read by the scanner. This registers as an untagged vehicle and triggers fines.
  • Letting the account go inactive. Salik accounts with no activity (no trips and no top-ups) for five consecutive years are deactivated, and any remaining balance is forfeited.
  • Ignoring low-balance SMS alerts. SMS notifications are a value-added service and may not always arrive. Check your balance proactively through the app or website before driving, particularly if you have not driven for several days.
  • Not updating your plate number. If you change your vehicle’s plate number, you must update this in your Salik account. Failure to do so can result in the system treating your vehicle as unregistered.

Practical Cost Calculation: How Much Does Salik Cost Per Month?

Monthly Salik costs vary widely depending on your commute. Here are two common scenarios for a five-day work week (Monday–Friday):

Scenario Gates Per Trip Daily Cost (Peak) Monthly Cost (22 Working Days)
Commute crossing 1 gate each way 2 gates/day AED 12 AED 264
Commute crossing 2 gates each way 4 gates/day AED 24 AED 528

Shifting both legs of the commute to off-peak hours (AED 4 per crossing) reduces these costs by one-third: AED 176 and AED 352 respectively. Commuters who can flex their work hours — arriving before 6:00 AM or after 10:00 AM, and leaving before 4:00 PM or after 8:00 PM — see meaningful savings over a year.

FAQ

How Much Does Salik Cost Per Crossing in Dubai?

Since 31 January 2025, each crossing costs AED 6 during peak hours (6:00 AM–10:00 AM and 4:00 PM–8:00 PM, Monday–Saturday), AED 4 during off-peak hours (10:00 AM–4:00 PM and 8:00 PM–1:00 AM), and nothing between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Sundays carry a flat AED 4 rate all day, excluding public holidays when variable pricing may apply.

What Time Is Salik Free in Dubai?

All ten Salik gates are toll-free between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM every day, including weekends and Sundays. During Ramadan, the toll-free window shifts to 2:00 AM–7:00 AM. Plan airport transfers, late-night outings, or early-morning commutes within this window to avoid all toll charges.

How Do I Buy a Salik Tag for My Car?

Purchase online at salik.ae for AED 120 (includes AED 50 tag, AED 50 prepaid credit, and AED 20 delivery), or buy in person at ENOC, EPPCO, Emarat, or ADNOC petrol stations for AED 100 (no delivery fee). Online-purchased tags are activated automatically; in-person tags require manual activation through the Salik website, Smart Salik app, or Dubai Drive app.

What Happens If I Drive Through a Salik Gate Without a Tag?

You have a ten-working-day grace period from the first untagged crossing to purchase and activate a tag. If you do not register within this period, fines begin at AED 100 for the first violation, AED 200 for the second, and AED 400 for each subsequent violation. Only one fine per day is imposed regardless of how many gates you cross.

What Is the Fine for Insufficient Salik Balance?

If your account balance is too low when you pass a gate, you have five working days to recharge. If the balance remains insufficient after this grace period, a fine of AED 50 applies per day the vehicle passes through gates, capped at one violation per day. Setting up auto-recharge prevents this scenario entirely.

Can I Avoid Salik Charges by Taking a Different Route?

Yes. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), most of Al Khail Road (E44), Emirates Road (E611), and the Floating Bridge have no Salik gates. These routes bypass the toll corridor, though they may add travel time. Use Google Maps or the RTA Dubai app to find the fastest toll-free route for your specific journey.

Are Taxis Exempt from Salik in Dubai?

No. Taxis pass through Salik gates and the toll is added to the passenger’s fare. Each time the taxi crosses a gate, AED 4–6 (depending on the time of day) is added to the metered total. This applies to all taxi operators in Dubai.

Do Electric Vehicles Get Free Salik Tags in Dubai?

Owners of 100% electric vehicles can obtain a free Salik tag from RTA, waiving the AED 100 purchase cost. However, electric vehicles are not exempt from toll charges — standard variable rates (AED 4–6) still apply at all gates. Apply at any of the 13 Salik customer service centres with your vehicle registration card showing EV classification.

How Many Salik Toll Gates Are There in Dubai?

Dubai operates ten Salik toll gates as of November 2024. The two newest gates — Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road and Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road — were activated in November 2024, expanding the network from eight. All ten gates follow the same variable pricing schedule.

Can I Have Multiple Cars on One Salik Account?

Yes. You can add multiple vehicles to a single Salik account, but each vehicle requires its own physical tag. One account with multiple vehicles simplifies balance management — all tolls are deducted from the same prepaid balance. Add vehicles through the Salik website, Smart Salik app, or by calling 800 SALIK.
